The palace musical ‘Daejanggeum’ opens at Sungjeongjeon of
Gyeonghuigung (Palace). Premiering in 2007, the musical was based on the famous
hallyu drama of the same name and has now been improved to embrace the charming
surroundings of the palace as it enters its third season.
The improvements in this third season include a closer attention
to the historical facts tied to ‘Daejanggeum’ and a new musical score to better
highlight and strengthen the characters involved. By combining modernity to the
history of Korea, the musical allows you to understand that history lives and
prospers in the modern era.
‘Daejanggeum’, the musical, re-translates the actual Daejanggeum
by adding a new theme to the existing episodic structure. In addition, the new
version utilizes all the structures of Gyeonghuigung (Palace) including the
roofs and corridors, as well as Sungjeongjeon, as the stage for the performance.
The features of Gyeonghuigung (Palace), such as the building lines, colors,
patterns and textures remain unchanged, thus allowing plenty of space for the
actors. As such, this performance circumvents many of the restrictions that
outdoor stages typically suffer from and takes the form of a comprehensive
speaking choir performance. In addition, the lighting, which may easily be
overlooked by an audience during an indoor performance, makes the lines and
patterns of the palace stand out even more beautifully. Furthermore, the
performance gives off more natural atmosphere that can never be expressed with
indoor stage, and the performance continues without dark stages, so that the
stage, actors and the audience are united as one in a common space.
The third season of ‘Daejanggeum’ also has some changes in its
storyline. Now, the story focuses on the life story of Jang-guem and a new
character, Jang-deok, who taught Jang-geum medicine. With this new storyline and
character, ‘Daejanggeum’ highlights a woman who overcame many difficulties to
shape her destiny and perfectly describes Jang-geum’s anguish until she
eventually became a female court physician. In addition, what we should not miss
is the love story of Jang-geum and Min Jeong-ho. Their romance is described much
more delicately to touch the heart of audience. All of the musical pieces were
re-arranged for the third season performances to better facilitate communication
between the audience and the actors. The story structure has also become more
upgraded with clear conclusion.
This show also gives audiences the opportunity to experience the
charms of actors that are hidden jewels. Lee Tae-won, the famous musical singer
who starred in ‘The Last Empress’, plays Han Sanggung, and Park Sang-jin, an
alumnus of the Manhattan School of Music, plays Min Jung-ho. The pop singers
Dana and Lisa have joined the cast for this season as Seo Jang-geum. King
Jungjong is played by Hong Gyeong-su and his faithful subject, Jo Gwang-jo, is
played by Kim Tae-hun, both of whom gained attention in ‘Baram ui nara’ (country
of wind). The newly joined cast members promise a brand-new ‘Daejanggeum’
experience, unlike anything seasons one and two had to offer.
Also, for those interested in the show but unable to afford
expensive musical performances, the Seoul Metropolitan City and Seoul Foundation
for Arts and Culture will designate a certain number of seats as Hi Seoul seats
to be offered at 10,000 won. The producer plans to provide an event day, the Hi
Seoul Special Day, when all seats will be offered at 10,000 won.
‘Daejanggeum’ - carrying the mantle of the hallyu fever
generated by the original drama - will be an event that anybody, no matter age
nor gender, can enjoy. Why not plan a family outing to enjoy not only the
charming scenery of the old palace but also an impressive musical
performance?
