Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market is Seoul’s main hub for
seafood. The market is open 24 hours, and everyday, from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., there
is a seafood auction (starting with squid and then followed by fish). After the
auction, the market opens to the general public from about 9 a.m. Inside the
market, there are some 250 restaurants specializing in sashimi (“hwoe”) and
other seafood-based dishes and soups. In fact, customers buy their sashimi at a
fish shop and bring it to those restaurants in the market and eat (the
restaurants provide the side dishes, liquor and prepare hot soup called
“maeuntang”).
